the bus is late so that u will have more time to prepare to flag it early. if the bus is on time, then you would not have time to flag it early, like 4km away, and thus the bus driver would not be able to stop in time for you. it is to be considerate to the passengers for the “flag the bus early” campaign that the bus is late. be thankful. it is your privilege and not your right to be served by a world class transportation system, which many first world countries do not claim to have.
Give the girl a break…it is one thing to be critical , but another thing to hit below the belt ,in this manner.
Two wrongs do not make a right.I believe you can do better than this comic.
Before OCt 1st , bus 80 from bugis to sengkang, $1.33.
after oct 1st $1.38. went to SBStransit journey planner to check only $1.35 for that journey. emailed them to clarify. checked the website the next day. they changed it to $1.38.
what kind of service is that???
i agree with tt. yes, she is incredibly self-centred and foolish. but she is also young and at a vulnerable age (don’t we all remember how judgmental teenagers are?). i think she’s been shamed enough already, through words, and through having her pictures splashed around the net and criticised.
caricatures like yours are nothing short of cruel.
let’s show her what graciousness is. that’s something that doesn’t require an elite education, only human decency.
you’ve had your fun. let everyone who was involved in this debacle get on with their lives, hopefully with lessons learnt.
full disclosure: was from rjc too, but am significantly older and don’t know her at all.
No doubt we need to show empathy to the poor “elite” girl who’s still in her teens. i’m sure she is learning and maturing with each day.
however, i also believe that the value of humility should be instilled in our young. if you have the guts to say what you said, then have the guts to also apologise for your OWN mistakes. Don’t hide behind your MP father who has to make a public statement to apologise on your behalf.
reports say that she has been counselled and understand her mistake and the consequence of her comments. if this is so, how difficult can it be to be a responsible young adult and apologise for your OWN comments? until she says it, who knows, she may still be defiant.
Just give it a break. This is a comic, somthing to be laughed at and not taken seriously. Why are all of you making such a big deal over this. Just laugh and not be such a bloody pain.
PLEASE PLEASE…
Don’t ever use phrases like “first world”… *CRINGE*
Only Singaporeans have the temerity to lay claims on that.
Heh. That said, the local transport system sure pisses me off everytime. Ever since they constructed the North East Line, I’ve been spending and waiting more than before.
Agad, I simply adore the Hong Kong’s MTR. That is what I call a great transport system.
What I think sucks is that although cycling is a viable and sustainable form of transport in Singapore (like, most trips are within 10minutes of cycling), the Transport Minister would rather get more people to take Buses and Trains to increase $$$ or revenue. Think about it, cycling to the nearest LRT or MRT station instead of taking the bus, is alot faster. Heck, I overtake buses.
The Physical Development Feedback Group highlighted the opposite stance the Traffic Police and LTA have on cycling and the need for clearer guidelines but this has gone on ignored…
The whole saga is so ironic : The inhumane humanities “scholar” believes in the brutal truth of meritocracy…. until kicked in the ….. teeth by the brutally level playing field of the internet.

Actually, if you look closely at the 4th frame … it is unclear whether she hit below or above the belt. If you ask me, I think she hit at about belt-level … but judging by the expression of the WOL (Wretched Overassuming Leech), there may have been some “collateral damage” below the belt … =p
Its a webcomic, no one should take it seriously. Hell, even I don’t take myself seriously. Lighten up folks.
Its too bad the authorities has steadfastly chosen to resist calls for bicycle lanes. I’d be the first to get a bike if they ever have that. Unfortunately hell hasn’t forzen over yet, so that won’t be happening anytime soon. So its sardine can buses and MRTs for the peasants.
You all realise that this pervasive blogging media is not going to make a dent on the Singapore meritocracy.
As more and more Singaporeans end up as professional bloggers, the elites and the rules government will continue oblivious to your plight. Soon all our bus drivers will be foreign workers. The government will be foreign talent. And our outsourced prime minister “Prof. Dr. Ex. Muthusamy JiaQui Singalingam” will repeat the meritoracy story for your blogging children (if you have any)
she 18 and during my grandma days, she will already be a mother and her father will be a grandfather.
I think the gov is right, singapore system could not produce world class talent, that is why we need to import them.
I agree with micheal, during those days, they were already mothers at 18 and had to take responsibilities for their family & actions.
There is one other thing here about current family values, nowadays, we always say because we have not time, must work like mad to provide for the family. But think about those days, i was pretty sure our grandparents & parents had slogged too, but why is it that they don’t pamper & protect their kids like now we do? Don’t they love their kids any less? Of coz they do, that is why they never spare the cane…
But sorry to say first, but i think we are also missing one other point here. Our parents are the ones who instill values to us. If you are interested, watch BBC’s Child of our Time.
And about the cycling lane, I will vote a “Yea” for it. But too bad, economy is more important than anything else, even in education….
she been raised in a different world bros(silver spoon) unlike us have to suffer day by day for the rest of our poor life, hope she can see when she reach 40 then she know how it feel
[...] recent uproar in singapore over the “elitist” sentiments of a high school girl and her politician father spawned an online comic, Elitist Girl. with the help of its creative blogger, Elite Girl goes about meting elitist justice to whiny singaporeans who fail to appreciate the forest for its trees. in one of such incidents, Elite Girl punishes a commuter for complaining about the bus arriving late, though what really got me laughing was a comment it garnered: the bus is late so that u will have more time to prepare to flag it early. if the bus is on time, then you would not have time to flag it early, like 4km away, and thus the bus driver would not be able to stop in time for you. it is to be considerate to the passengers for the “flag the bus earlyâ€? campaign that the bus is late. be thankful. it is your privilege and not your right to be served by a world class transportation system, which many first world countries do not claim to have. I dun understand wat this flag early campaign is about actually,
sorry i’m not elist….anyway, aren’t transport providers
suppose to provide good services by slowing down
when approaching bus stops to allow commuters to board..
many a times its the ah mahs and ah gongs (not elists bcos they have to take busess…)..that have problems seeing the bus numbers…personally i encounter buses speeding across bus stops esp at night at unpopulated bus stops
…wonder they will have “slow down campaign” or may be “see far campaign” for the drivers….
it is sad that we keep seeing all these “campaigns”
…to teach us how to behave….blah…..elist idea.???..
…and we claim we’re 1st class?
Hmm incidentally my groups PW (bah) project was on cycling and proposing cycling lanes also (wow how original =p lol)
_and_ incidentally im from “the elite school”, sometimes its hard being “inside” and trying to get others to treat you normally, and sometimes we simply attract all sorts of fire from anti-elitism ppl, but sometimes someone does something stupid intentionally…
ironically theres currently a split between those who support her and those against, tho should be quite obvious which side im on =P actually this reflects a sentiment much more widespread and set than the issue itself.. if we singaporeans let things accumulate until it reaches a flashpoint such as this maybe our strategy in getting things done need to be rethought..
Personally i dun think elite and non-elite is an issue here
but insensitivity from puported “elites/future elites” is.
coming from someone who haven’t even started work in society
tells very much how much they dont know the ground..
As sg strive become more open economy , things are getting more competitive..and many working have already find it hard to balance
manage..taking care their parents…looking after kids…
and managing self serving bosses…or compressed under many other
issues…tough
hence more and more sensitivity is neded from everyone, else these potential flashpoints become divisive to society..
It is not matter of faulting father or daughter…
everybodi is entitled to their opinions…based on their values
..esp in this net era…jus dun shaft it down others throat
and call people “whinners” “stupid” “crackpots” “idiots” etc
jus becos you subrcribe certain thinking such as darwinian principles… If you do dat then be prepared
to be lambasted by the socalled “same groups” of people who are entitled to defend / correct /justify such saying…
.., hiding n not apologetic will only create impressions that
they hold the views which will continue to anger people..
Parents do have duties to teach their children right values
and equally should allow them to correct their mistakes
for them to grow..

skye: that’s a really naive thing to say – that a comic should not be taken seriously.

time to redirect our resentment to the one who brought her up. they should be parodied for passing on such screwed up values.

I think she is too elite to even read this website. Anyway, enjoy the comic and stop reading between the lines for the “over sensitive’ ones.
