Reckless Hate
Theoden: So much death. What can men do against such reckless hate?
Aragorn: Ride out with me. Ride out and meet them
LOTR- The Two Towers.
Yesterday I came across this blog post written by a malaysian who apparently received her education here. And as I went through the comments I was quite apalled at the amount of hate and anger directed towards singaporeans by the malaysians. Of the 40 comments I’ve counted, 4 was positive, 3 neutral, a couple by singaporeans and the rest just pretty much singapore bashing.
And I wonder what did we do to the malaysians to earn such animosity. Because some singaporean has the temerity to tell them to get use to the injustices of life?
Sometimes I wonder just what did we do to make the malaysians hate us so.
At some point in time, did we march across the causeway subjugated the malaysians and enslaved them for generations? Did we poison their land and water and colonised their country and subject their citizens to grevious labour?
After the recent malaysian elections, I was genuinely happy for the malaysians- happy that this may be the start of a more equitable society for them. Happy that the change will eventually bring them socially equality where everyone is treated equally regardless of their skin color and ethnicity.
“…Another thing, S`poreans exists in `their paradise` as long as M`sia is dumbed down. The more M`sia improves, so will S`pore recede.”- Hutchrun
If malaysia do well, I am happy for them because I believe in the long run, having a prosperous and stable malaysia can only mean good things for singapore. Yet here is one comment written by a malaysian who seem to think singapore will fade as malaysia prosper and I wonder why? Why does it have to be a win-lose situation? Why does singapore has to recede if malaysia do well? What can’t both countries work together, prosper together and make it a win-win situation. And mind you, this is written by a malaysian who is living and working in singapore- enjoying all the perks and privileges of our strong economy.
“…On the roads, they flout laws in their flashy cars like the roads were built by their fathers – not to mention the rubbish they throw out. What they can`t do in S`pore they do in M`sia, polluting the environment.”- Hutchrun
I am not saying singaporeans are the best of drivers, but lets be honest, there are bad drivers and motorcyclists on both sides of the causeway. And who hasn’t seen malaysian vehicles and lorries spewing black exhaust fumes on singapore roads- so its not like malaysian vehicles don’t pollute our air either Again is this a valid reason to hate us?
I count myself lucky to have worked with more than a few malaysians and I’ve always saw them as honest, decent, hardworking people who possesses an admirable work ethic.
“Modern life wor. So happening….Work, work, work, debt, debt, debt… ? Work is good but not when it turns into an obsession”- Jed
Yet on the other side coin, they only see us as kiasu work obsessed anal retentives.
“…To paint a whole society with the same brush as you do with an individual isn’t fair. However, as unfair as generalisation can be, it is that both nature and nurture that shape one’s character…However Singapore, with its lack of diversity in politics and geography , seemed to be a different kettle of fish altogether.
I find the psyche of your guest Singaporean commentator reflective of majority of our neighbours down south.”- Edward Costello
Even those comments that try to come across as balanced and objective eventually betrays their true intent.
“…well said. no disrespect to singaporeans but they are worse than us malaysian especially in term of ethics. from outside look so wonderful-lah, we are the best-lah. From inside, same bloody retard, no need to look far, JI leader can escape from the so called best prison security in ASIA. (my *ss!)”- Abdul
Here’s one that starts out saying no disrespect and than proceed to disrespect everyone by calling us bloody retards.
Honestly speaking, I am really curious where does all these animosity come from. Are singaporeans really that hateful? Maybe as a singaporean, I really am blind to my own faults, but it would be interesting to as least know where all this hate comes.
It appears nothing would make the malaysians more happy than to see singapore sink into the deep blue sea despite the fact that singapore provides both education and employment opportunites to thousands of malaysians every year.
Just look at this commenter-
“Being an oversea Malaysian residing in Singapore for over 20 years I read with much enthusiasm my daily updates from Malaysia Today. While I was contemplating of giving up my Malaysian Citizenship a couple of years ago, I am now full with optimism the possibility of relocating back to Penang in the near future with the recent political development in Malaysia.
I often remarked that it would be sufficient for many overseas Malaysian to pack their bags back if Penang or other states could achieve half of Singapore’s present economic and infrastructure achievements.”- Hutchrun
This person who has been living under the hospitality of singapore, enjoying all the perks and privileges that singapore has to offer- has not had one good thing to say about us despite been here for 20 years. You’d think someone is pointing a gun at him to force him to stay here. And now that things appears to be looking up for malaysia, he can’t wait to leave.
The way I see it, being kiasu is really not so bad afterall. In comparison there are things in life much worse than being kiasu- such as reckless and unreasonable hate.

Hey Polygons,
This hate has been developing ever since the leadership began their holy than thou attitude towards internal and international relations. “The swiss? Pathetic government.. ours is the best. European and American nations are decadent rife with poor social programs. They suck. We rule. Everything that glitters in Singapore is the result of the PAP.” That’s how it started.
It spills downwards, Singaporean malays do feel a little more accomplished than their Malaysian counterparts and with good reason. But this pride is also a point of contention if it’s not tempered with humility and a graceful reverence to a sleight of fate that allowed you to exist in an economically stronger singapore.
That said, with the political change in Malaysia, only good things will come of it. I’m proud, even happy for Malaysia, that the combined will of it’s citizens can push an incumbent out of power even with promises of $$ and a strong economy. If anything, the recent Malaysian “tsunami” is a good indicator of how poor us Singaporeans are mentally- we live with such short-term views that the smallest “hong-bao” and the slightest whiff of estate upgrading and we allow our futures to be prostituted once again.
All this butt-F@#king we’re getting now is the result of the collective 66.6% AGREEING to let them do it continuously.
But then, what is the alternative? We’re in a zero-sum game now, even if the opposition did win, Mr Freak Result will call the military in and we begin a new era of life under a military dictatorship.
It’s not difficult to see why others hate us. When I already hate ourselves as a collective nation of political dimwits, the very folks who vote for the rice bowl without thinking long term. I said this to a fellow Singaporean on the train before: “So, our UBS injection just went poof! What do you think of our government now?” She replied, “Our government is good.. maybe it’s just the investment arm that’s bad.”
I wanted to say “It’s our government that put the prime minister’s wife in that seat! 8 ministers sit on the GIC board Hullo!?” But I decided not to, the look of pure idiotic self-content was indication enough that poor PR spin from mainstream media works cos WE ARE that stupid. Malaysians have every right to hate us, we’re dumb fucks who just happened to be blessed with a right mix of destiny, fate and leadership FOR THE ERA. We enjoy the good times NOW, but for how long?
Being kiasu is not bad, what’s bad is the kiasi attitude that will kill us in the long run. There are things worse in life than reckless and unreasonable hate, it’s being kiasi. You can mitigate recklessness, hell you can even temper unreasonable hate with a change in behaviour and a willingness to change, but being kiasi is a lifestyle for us, one that will kill our country.
Oh my…these comments against Singaporeans are nothing compared to the insults I have to endure as an American (in Singapore)! Just breathe deeply and smile. Then you’ll feel better. This is just human nature.
I venture that the animosity is encouraged by politicians both sides of the straits. Citizens from both countries should see through the political shenanigans perpetuated by the likes of PAP and UMNO leaders. A state of “tension” benefits both political parties as they play up irrational fear to strengthen their own political dominance, especially in the case of the PAP.
Hey, I’m also a Malaysian and reader of your blog. I studied and worked in Singapore for a good number of years, and I have made many good Singaporean friends. I think alot of the hate is directed towards the PAP’s injustices and arrogance, not towards Singaporeans as a whole.
Still, a nation’s citizens are responsible for the actions of its government, not the other way around.
